I am Master Jay. I started learning taekwondo since I was 6 years old and I’ve continued to train until I graduated college. I wanted the chance to teach what I’ve learned and share my passion in not only South Korea, but globally to even more people and children, which is why I started my business in America.
My business is Ace Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a traditional martial arts form from South Korea. I want to guide my students to be top Taekwondo athletes and be aces everywhere they go, which is why our taekwondo school is named Ace Taekwondo. At our dojang, we teach Olympic style taekwondo so kids and adults alike are able to learn beneficial life skills while improving their physical abilities. You gain so much while learning taekwondo, so you can say Ace Taekwondo offers a lot to our valuable students.
At first, I had no intent to start a business in America, but as I gained the experience of being a master and spending time with diverse children in America, I discovered my own philosophy and values, and I felt eager to teach proficiently. I searched for various marketing techniques and created my own curriculum to start my business.
In the beginning, I set up a booth outside my dojang to catch people’s eyes and handed out flyers. I also got help from nearby businesses to spread our taekwondo school’s name. We started social media accounts and participated in our township’s events to advertise how we teach at our dojang.
Advertising our business to others is definitely one of the biggest challenges, as it is important to demonstrate taekwondo to show others what it is, but some spaces make it difficult to do so. Additionally, showing people what we do and helping them understand why they should come to learn taekwondo can be hard to do initially.
My students motivate me. Being able to see how much they have improved since they first learned and seeing them have confidence in themselves inspires me to work harder for them. Not only that, but I love seeing my students have fun while learning taekwondo and being able to repay the people around me with the money I earned is definitely important to me.
Every single student and parent of mine who trust me and the way I teach, and believe my taekwondo school is worth investing in.
For my business, my top priorities are for both the masters and students to sweat during every lesson, which shows each side’s dedication and commitment to learning and teaching taekwondo.
It is important to have your firm beliefs and values, and also be able to adapt to new situations and be willing to learn different perspectives. After you have established that mindset, you should start your business and learn management. What comes before us being entrepreneurs, are us being leaders and teachers.
I think an entrepreneur is successful when they have confidence about their own skills and have the habit of giving their best with all their tasks, no matter how big or small they are. They do not give up and keep going with their work.
Success to me is having at least one dedicated student who has trusted and learned from me for more than 10 years.
